Sample Workbook   Dialogue ________________________________________________________________

Things to think about -

  1. What does it take to get you to really talk?
  1. What was your most memorable conversation with a domestic pet?

If I use the right phrase and the reader hears the phrase in his head, he sees the individual.
Frank O'Connor

Dialogue is my form of poetry. I can't write poetry to save my life. Dialogue is the nearest I can come to the poetic.
    V.S. Pritchett

"Hope is what keeps us alive," I said.

He stared at me for a while. "I've a damned good mind to give you a sock on the nose," he said.

"That's more like it," I said. "You couldn't do it without hardening up a bit, but I like the spirit. Now let's talk business."

From Mandarin's Jade by Raymond Chandler

Our characters can say things for us that we might never say to anyone else. Fiction can be a masquerade that allows us a freedom we may never have anywhere else. There is a lot to say. Why wait?

This is your chance to submit a sample of your writing to appear in the Student Publishing Page.  It is the web equivalent of reading aloud.  This is where you have the opportunity of getting feedback from other students and, in turn, give them some.

Just a reminder - this piece should be an excerpt from your exercises or something inspired by them.  Let's stay current.  No old poems or stories written for your English teacher.  Thanks. We'd love to see your stuff, so send it in.

Cut and paste an excerpt of your writing directly from your word processing program to the blank field on that page, then hit "submit". It's easy.  When you're finished submitting your writing, hit your browser's "Back" key to come back to this page.

By clicking below, you may enter any general literary comments, meaningful graffiti, random thoughts, or essential trivia onto the Student Bulletin Board.  Of course, it's optional, voluntary, non-mandatory, simply an opportunity.  Communicate computer tips, find a pen pal, share a list of your favorite books...

Questions, questions, questions. Is it something specific to this lesson or of a more general nature?  Does it have to do with the finer points of technique or involve broad philosophical principles?  If is has to do with writing, this is the place to ask.  We try to answer as many questions as possible in as great a depth as possible.  Submit your questions in the field below and watch for the answers at the Questions and Answer page.  The posting there will change every three weeks.
